The goal is to run linux (f8+) on the core2 mac mini off a usb flash
drive, and to not touch the internal hd drive. 

The DVD was just a test to make sure that the created iso image worked
on DVD media. (It did).

It does seem like booting off of USB flash is oddly-supported on the
mac. I'm just trying to puzzle out the details...
