I tried out xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.7.196-6.fc8 but afterwards X wouldn't start.
Going back to xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.7.196-2.fc8 fixed things.
I have an radeon 9200 and an NEC 2010X (which doesn't identify itself
the way newer LCD's do).
I have attached a log and a conf file if you want to look into this.
Renaming libdri.so to libdri_broken.so at least got me up and running.
I don't know why X does not start for you. I hoped that it was
mistakenly thrown in updates-testing and was for rawhide. It was not though.
All on one line below to test. Then startx from runlevel 3. You might
need to go back to the last Fedora 8 or grab the previously sticking
driver to test.
mv /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri_broken.so
