Once upon a time, in the days of xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.3.0.0-420.fc8, I could boot my desktop machine into the framebuffer in runlevel 3 (kernel param vga=792), and then start X with an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file that included the section: Section "Device" Identifier "Videocard0" Driver "intel" EndSection After updating to xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.4.99.1-0.18.20080107.fc9, I must alter my xorg.conf file to use the framebuffer driver.
