The 'helper apps' information, such as dvd+rw-tools, had to be added manually to the K3b configuration back then. Just having them installed on the system did not work. And there was something that 'root' had to do so that 'user' could access the drive. As I said a long time ago. Since I am no help I guess that I should not have tried. Sorry.
