In this case if the X config for firstboot had identified several available
resolutions you may have been able to cycle through them with ctrl-alt-- and
ctrl-alt-+ at that point.  Obviously it would be preferable for X to do this
cycling if its output is garbled, but whether its garbled or not isn't always
obvious to X. ;)
