Sorry, I didn't make it clear. I did an upgrade to my Fedora 7 system, the same file is still in place. I get a black screen on resume with no disk activity.

If you create an 'unload_modules' file with the same modules listed as
in F7, does the laptop suspend/resume?

My laptop (Thinkpad T61, Intel graphics, iwl4965) also has suspend
problems -- it either wakes up immediately, or goes comatose and won't
resume -- I've not had the time to track it down, but it might be a
related problem -- that some modules need blacklisting.
