Neither of these show the current ro/rw state of the filesystem.
The command you were looking for was 'mount'.

Sorry, I thought you wanted the settings from fstab

$ mount |grep boot
/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw)


It is possible this is happening from adding a 3rd hd to my system.  When I get home, I'll remove the drive and see what happens.
