iwl3945 not working with davej kernel

This evening I tried the latest kernel in davej's repo, 2.6.22-2, hoping
that the iwl3945 driver would work better than the older versions in F7
kernels (I find that NFS/SMB traffic degrades so badly over time as to
be unusable, e.g. for streaming media.).

Unfortunately, the wireless interface didn't come up at all and there
were some warnings relating to USB:
