I remember reading somewhere that forcedeth tries to use MSI by default.
If so, maybe your motherboard doesn't play well with MSI.  Check for MSI
with:

cat /proc/interrupts | grep MSI

If you see eth0 running with MSI, try booting with pci=nomsi.
