I removed the new packages manually.  Re ran yum
update and it installed the newer packages.  I also
changed the usb cable to the other usb hub because
at startup

I saw the message
usb 2-1 dev read/64 error -110
or something similar to this.

Reran system-config-printer and printed a test page
and it has worked.
