I have interest in your problem being resolved because I have an Intel 865G also. It works as an upgrade, but might fail as a fresh install.

Did you try the i810-xorg.conf file that I sent out earlier? Did it work?
No... I'll have to look back through the archives, because I
must have missed that conf file you sent.

I included the file with the bug report and various comments. BIOS settings, the BIOS version shipped with the computer were my major problems with the Dell with an Intel 865G card.

Hopefully your problem will be investigated and corrected by those more in the know than I am.

My next problem with the 865G card was related to random crashes of the server where X was killed but the residual memory content was displayed on the screen. When they broke the Intel 810 driver for work in the 830, it fixed the random crashes with the 865G. The bug report was left not visibly being responded to. Anyway, at lease you have X running with the VESA temporarily.
