Yes. Evolution is just a random gnome app, you can swap it for better

Sorry, I should have been a bit more clear in my question. The actual
package name is 'evolution-data-server'. It seems to be tied into gaim,
gnome-panel, nautilus, and control-center. I would assume from the name
that it is something to do with evolution, but not 100% sure. Is there a
reason it's tied into the above packages? What functionality does it
give them?
e-d-s is a very small package not dependent on evolution despite its
name (which is there for historic reasons). Its provides a database for
desktop wide address book, calender etc.
