If this is really the case then yum is absolutely correct - you have a file conflict and, no, these are not duplicates. In situations like those both packages have to be updated in a one transaction, or you will see what you are seeing, but why do you need both variants of gimp installed in the first place? Anything which _really_ prevents you from 'yum remove gimp.i386'?
