fixed my problem by installing the package dbus-x11, phew!
maybe it's a good idea to have some dependency on it.

the only warning i get now in /etc/xses-* is

/usr/lib/python2.4/site-packages/gtk-2.0/gnome/vfs.py:4:
DeprecationWarning: Module gnome.vfs is deprecated; please import
gnomevfs instead
  DeprecationWarning)

and gdm login still shows the default selection window.
