Ah, that is nVidia FX 5200 graphics.  So far fingers were pointing
at 'radeon' (https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5781 is
about radeon driver) or maybe, a bit more general, 'ati'.

Maybe this "optimize for size" is indeed the real culprit?  Tracking
that down can be, ahem, "entertaining".
