Yes that was the problem. I downloaded the firmware from
http://ipw2100.sourceforge.net/firmware.php (v0.55-current firmware) and
copied ipw2100-1.3.fw into /lib/firmware.

Presumably this *is* a legal issue but shouldn't it be in the release
notes?
