The thinking seems to be that threading (or was it mutex) changes in the kernel broke java, there is at least one bug open for it, others might have been dupe'd to it now ...

I do not know what all gcj-dbtool does

I think it keeps a catalogue of class files and equivalent .so files compile to native code, something like that ...
