For what it's worth, I've been getting the same error. But don't have
MAKEDEV installed. (Installed from FC5T2 disc and have used pup to
update to Rawhide).
# rpm -qf /sbin/MAKEDEV
file /sbin/MAKEDEV is not owned by any package
# rpm -V MAKEDEV
package MAKEDEV is not installed
two udev versions where installed...
# rpm -q udev
udev-078-4
udev-078-8
I removed udev-078-4 but still get the "don't know how to make device"
messages on boot.
yum install MAKEDEV
