The positioning of the window doesn't necessarily correlate with whether
it steals focus, especially if the window does not come up underneath
the pointer.

I, too, noticed windows showing up underneath others, didn't bug me too
much.  But I have *very much* noticed the improvements with regard to
the focus stealing problem, and I am most pleased with that change.  It
seems the GNOME folks have finally found a way to keep from throwing the
focus at windows which show up on distant parts of the screen, and that
has made the GNOME desktop quite a bit more usable for me.
