Yes. I only cleaned the metadata. As for the runlevel bit, I did this when the
problem first surfaced, did a yum update and that at least allowed me to boot
(X would hang on an old kernel)

How, exactly, do I do what you describe. My var/cache/yum/development/packages
directory contains multiple versions of the same package (older versions).
