also, /dev/snd is pretty empty which I assume is the problem.

There aren't any pcm* or control* listings in there.  Is there an easy way to create these, some kind of probing command?

whatever, did todays updates and did a bunch of mknod's in /dev/snd and rebooted, all works now so if it was a bug it ran away.
