How many non-comment lines do you have in: /etc/pango/i386-redhat-linux-gnu/pango.modules I ended up with only one line and X wouldn't start (neither VESA nor native). I copied the contents from another system as this file is generated (by who?) and not part of an RPM. To get in, use the boot option: s (you might want to remove the rhgb option) Then "init 3" at the shell prompt (or check the above file). This might have been the result of a interim RPM (pango?) that messed things up.
