OK, I realize that the installer's package selection is a "work in progress" or just a "placeholder" untill the real package selector is available but ... I thought that de-selecting everything (all package groups) would get me a minimal install ... nope, more like a "default" install with about 2GB of packages instead of the expected ~600MB ... I got metacity, lots of gnome, etc. ... like I said, it looks like a default install.
