I really meant to type raid1 and not raid0. :-)

One needs to be careful about locations of grub bits-and-pieces.
You do not want to look for these on a disk which just failed.

Right. Which is why it is great that the install attempted to put grub on both disks of the raid1 set, the only problem is, it failed on (hd0), and that is the one that bios uses by default, so it didn't boot.
