The "java" you're using is actually gij.  xnap is a Swing application
and will not run on gij, although this has nothing to do with your
problem.  I ran xnap on gij with an updated libgcj.  It managed to get
further but failed a little further along.

You'll need to install a proprietary JVM (Sun, IBM, or BEA) and use that
for now.
