And having done this, copy /etc to /home/etc before the new install.
This will give you something for comparison when you find "This doesn't
work anymore...".
I also have /usr/local being a symlink to /home/local.
better yet - never have anything in /usr/local.

Even better - mount /usr/local as a separate partition... then it
doesn't get overwritten.
