I have stable operation by reverting to kernel versions.  Currently,

 Gigabyte GA-K8NS motherboard [nForce3 250 chipset]
AMD64 2800+
1.0G DDR400 ram
70G Seagate sata
DVD 'LITE-ON ' 'DVD SOHD-16P9S  ' 'FS07'

2005 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

Running headless with a vnc connection to my workstation.
