It works, but you must be careful about what's updated when and that you don't mistakenly reboot at the wrong point. Actually, I think I may be referring to a manual piecemeal rpm update I did. Still, you wind up with some weirdness that only safely goes away on reboot. In theory, it's a good idea to support this kind of upgrade, but given the differences between some releases, updating from one to the other on a live system can cause problems.
