I traced the problem to HAL. Verbose option on hald command line output 4 lines and segfaulted. I re-installed the following rpms: hal-0.4.0-10.i386.rpm hal-cups-utils-0.5.2-8.i386.rpm hal-devel-0.4.0-10.i386.rpm hal-gnome-0.4.0-10.i386.rpm with rpm -Uvh --force *.rpm Maybe there was a problem with the configuration files before re-install? I got a lonnnnggg debug trace after re-installing. HAL, gnome-volume-manager and eggcups seem to be working now. Match
