Hmm... I am in the same situation as you. For a wireless network at home, which is WEP encrypted and not broadcasting the ESSID and I could get it to work. First - have you updated to the latest rawhide networkmanager ? Second - try first setting key using iwconfig. Then run NetworkManager. One very irritating thing about NetworkManager is that it keeps asking me for a WEP key about 4-5 times before the applet settles down.
