I just ran prelink manually.  cpu usage never went over 3%.  It was done
in 2 minutes. 

It was not an issue that prelink was running.  I think it was an issue
that is was running at 80% cpu resources.  The process in my kdevelop
crash goes to 95% cpu resources as did the root top process.

BTW: I updated from a stable and good fc2 install to fc3t3. 

I'm thinking I'm going to install a fresh fc3rcx in about an hour,
unless someone wants to know anything more about the problems I have
with this installation.
