I wonder where these logs could be recorded if failed boots croak
attempting to find disks.  This is well before even a rudimentary
system is present.

This is indeed quite old piece of a hardware but still it was booting ok
until very recently.  Once things will go beyond a relatively small
group of people bothering with rawhide it is quite likely that more
systems with a similar characteristics will show up.
