No it does not have to be on the same subnet, nor does it need any special forwarding on the router. All you need is a couple DHCP options set on your DHCP server and a TFTP server anywhere on your network to hold the pxelinux.0 and vmlinuz/initrd images. > But then I have avoided PXE boot for a decade or more for the above reasons.
