I am working with Fedora29 on arm, but this is really a long time issue that needs to be addressed.

The ~/.vnc/xstartup file created by vncserver is for gnome.  It does not work for other desktop environments.

There is no documentation (that I have found) on what should be in xstartup for, say Xfce (that I use).  Googling comes up with different recommendations for other repos and it is confusing what to use.

Minimally, the xstartup should have commented lines for other desktops and to indicate that the default is for gnome.

I can put up a bug report on this to ask for this 'enhancement'.

And if anyone can give me the proper xstartup content for Xfce, I would appreciate it.

thanks

Even if huge numbers of people had not fled GNOME, once GNOME 3 for foisted on us, I would still think that Robert's complaint & suggestion are valid.

I switched to Xfce when I started working on armv7 boards.  At first that was the only desktop available (back on F17?).   I switched my X86_64 notebook to it to get longer battery life.

So far, on F29-armhfp I have had to fix SELinux issues per:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1577511

I will file a bug report on this.

Now that I have gotten past the pid permissions problem, I am reviewing a lot of different sources as to what to put in xstartup.

xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
startxfce4 &

Is not enough...

I have to read a number of responses from the Fedora users list and hope to find what works now...

If anyone knows it, please send it

thanks
