I have a Samsung ML-1740 laser printer which in F20 and below would work immediately after install, even though splix wasn't installed. I believe it was necessary for foomatic to be installed, and in one previous release it wasn't installed by default, but was supposed to be. Anyway, in F21 it was necessary to install splix.
