  just did a "yum clean all" to start with clean metadata and "yum
update", and it's downloading a *pile* of new packages since this
morning(?) so this might solve everything. waiting ... waiting ...

  ... several diagnostic msgs saying "does not exists [sic]" :-)

ok, that seemed to fix it. fully updated. thanks.
