I have F19 on two systems I've been working with for the past two days trying
to isolate a Nouveau DVI problem, and in the process ran across this:
Only on the F19 system most recently updated (Tuesday, server 1.14.1),
PreferredMode in xorg.conf to override a CRT's optimal resolution either
never gets applied in the first place (Intel 4500 VGA1 or rv380 DVI-0 out),
or it doesn't stick (rv380 VGA-0 out).
In all other cases both PreferredMode and DisplaySize are applied:
1-F19 installation last updated nearly 2 months ago:
server 1.14.1
a: Intel 915 VGA1
b: rv380 VGA-0
c: rv380 DVI-0
2-F18
server 1.13.3
a: Intel 4500 VGA1
b: rv380 VGA-0
c: rv380 DVI-0
3-openSUSE 13.1
server 1.14.1
a: Intel 4500 VGA1
b: rv380 VGA-0
c: rv380 DVI-0
All use the exact same xorg.conf file with one exception as necessary, that
being the need for 'Option "monitor-DVI-0" "Default Monitor"' to have the
configs applied to the DVI output.
The 4500's motherboard BIOS has these options:
Initiate Graphic Adapter:
IGD
PCI/IGD
PCI/PEG
PEG/IGD
PEG/PCI (selected by loading "optimized defaults")
Boot Display Device:
D-SUB + HDMI (selected by loading "optimized defaults")
D-SUB + DVI
Only DisplayPort
The only video connectors on the motherboard are VGA and DVI. I've yet to
discover any explanation:
1-why a non-existent port is selected by default,
2-what the Initiate selections mean
3-how one goes about choosing the most appropriate selections
The motherboard did come with a DVI to HDMI adapter, but nothing in its
manual discusses the above. Whether any of this should matter I doubt, since
both F18 and openSUSE work as expected.
Xorg.0.log files with descriptive filenames, and lspci -v output for the
gfxchips, are at:

In looking at them myself, I'm unable to recognize anything that may be
responsible for the failure of the newer F19 system. It could be there is
difference in installed X packages. Both were minimal installs originally
that were later upgraded to F19 from F18. It also could be a bug arising in
between build dates of the two F19 systems' package versions.
If I update the one that works, and it quits working, it means a new bug
arose in the interim, plus I'd have two that don't do F19 right until the bug
gets fixed (if it ever does, see:
https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=39949). Otherwise, it would
likely be something missing from the other, but could be a hardware or BIOS
issue. Any suggestions what to do that might isolate the difference, before
upgrading the older? I'm really tired now after two days of almost nothing
but this interfering with the Nouveau problem that got me started.
