There could be some "funny" characters in an output of parted most likely in a disk identification ("Model:"). Either as a result of a parted bug, or a disk playing fast-and-loose, or both. You can possibly check with 'parted -l | cat -v'. If you are getting stuck in a gnome-terminal then on a menubar under "Terminal" you should have "Reset" and/or "Reset and Clear". If something like that is not available then typing in blind 'reset' followed by 'ctrl-J' most likely will clear the condition. If that really helps then what you see is not a responsibility of bash.
