"Alpha" "Beta" "Final" are descriptive enough names themselves.

I agree - the Gold thing really is related to the old-school process of when a final CD (software or music) was turned into a gold master, which was then sent to manufacturing for duplication. It's just the terminology.

Another thread on this list recently (that I'm about to head back to) recently discussed having better education about Alpha/Beta/Final, and it seems like adding more terminology to the mix (bronze and silver) would make things even less simple/comprehensible to the outside observer.
