Here a grub.conf entry that works for me booting F17 from a grub1 mbr:
# x and y are grub1 boot drive/partition references
title Fedora 17
root (hdx,y)
kernel /grub2/i386-pc/core.img
Maybe this isn't a bug, but it sure stumped me for a day or so until my
friend google helped and led me to common bugs.
