As ajax says, check if you're getting software rendering of GNOME Shell,
which is likely to be slow: if so you can force fallback mode from a VT,
much faster than trying to get through the control center, with this
command:

gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session session-name 'gnome-fallback'

run it as user - not root - then log out and back in again.
Well, I'm actually running KDE, though I initially opened Gnome and had the same issues.

Aside from that, though, there is a known bug with the kernel in Alpha
which causes slowness on some systems, it's possible it affects
VirtualBox 'machines' too. See
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=795050 . The latest kernel
build fixes that issue:

https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2012-2304/kernel-3.3.0-0.rc4.git1.4.fc17

so grab that and see if it helps.
I'm running yum update at this moment, and it did pull in a new kernel. It's taking forever (44 installed so far out of 252 updates), but, I'll report back on the results. I also will re-run Guest Additions install using Andre's tip, and I'll report those results as well. I will reboot after the yum update finishes, just to isolate one 'fix' from the other.
This testing has taken an entire day and as I type this at a bit after 4PM my time, it's just booting up again after the two tests. The first test was to see if the new kernel would help - unfortunately, though it took many hours to install the 252 updates, when I tried to boot, it almost immediately kernel panicked... Then I followed Andre's suggestion and after a lot of fiddling and having to install gcc and its dependencies and other stuff, I finally got the GL module to build successfully; that's where I'm rebooting from now...so, let's see what we've got -
Bootup to login screen was easily over 5 minutes - not so good
Login screen has a strange bug where it requires that I press the caps-lock key in order for the password to succeed - I know this has nothing to do with this thread, but, it's very odd (I've double checked that password, and I don't have it wrong - in fact it works normally once I get on my desktop)
Logging in is easily over three minutes now - not so good
Click on the Fedora 'start' button at lower left and it takes 9 seconds for the menu to pop up Clicked on 'Web browser' in menu, and it still hasn't opened a window after three minutes

this is pretty useless
