It doesn't need to be made part of the base package. It could be handled the same way proftpd-ldap or proftpd-postgres is...

If it's included in the proftpd sources, then sure, please file a
bugzilla entry to track the change.
If it's an external module, then I'd really prefer if it got merged
upstream.

It's part of the tarball.  I've filed a bug, and submitted a fix.

I'd commit it myself, but I've not yet gotten sponsored.
