Okay, I found out why:

[17:31] <spot> but where there is no name conflict
[17:31] <spot> each package should Provide: php-FOO = %{version}-%{release}
[17:31] <spot> this way, we should catch the yum install php-FOO case

Not sure if I'm on my own here, but this seems like a lot of namespace clutter for little benefit. What's the problem with "yum install php-pear-FOO"?
