Which past? xdg-open is a simple script, and it will fallback to firefox
anyway.

Now, maybe one of the framework xdg-open may use didn't worked (gnome-open,
kfmclient, exo-open or mimeopen), without clearly erroring such that the
BROWSERS list wasn't used, but this is not, in my opinion, a reason not to use
xdg-open.

I don't think it is wise to workaround xdg-open bugs that way; If xdg-open
doesn't work it should be investigated, but using firefox, is, in my opinion,
an error.
