Yes, the GMP plugin is not needed for video playback at all. Video playback in
firefox is done through ffmpeg instead, which in turn uses libopenh264 (the
regular library, _not_ the GMP plugin). As far as I know, the GMP plugin is
only used for video conferencing. See

particular the "Test page" link there.
