A conversation with upstream reveals that a newer version of matplotlib is to blame for the test failures after all. The testing section of pyproject.toml says: # Matplotlib outputs are sensitive to the matplotlib version "matplotlib==3.7.*", and we have matplotlib 3.9.0 in Rawhide, so the test problem is self-inflicted. In this case, the difference in output is only the names of a few png files. The tests in question aren't testing that, so I have added a sed invocation to %prep to change the names to those produced by matplotlib 3.9.0. That way, the tests can still be run and fulfill their intended purposes.
