“%doc example” might be a good addition to the -doc subpackage.

I don’t see any obvious cause for the i686 issue. Unless you see something I
don’t, I think ExcludeArch will be needed. This would be a good thing to report
upstream (not required for package approval). I can reproduce it in an i386
chroot with just “./configure && make && make check”, without any patches or
extra build flags, so it is not specific to Fedora packaging.
