However, I was able to install the gcalendar provider as my user without problem (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/sunbird/addon/4631). It does have to be downloaded by hand and imported from the filesystem, true, but I have no idea how to change that (IIRC it's the same with thunderbird).
