https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=1501522 --- Comment #36 from Nicolas Chauvet (kwizart) <kwizart@xxxxxxxxx> --- (In reply to Wim Taymans from comment #34) ... > The fdk-aac-freeworld name isn't acceptable as the package is considered > nonfree, > the name should be fdk-aac-nonfree Can someone explain why the hell are you going to accept a non-free software into Fedora in the first step ? https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Encode/AAC, quoting: "FFmpeg supports two AAC-LC encoders (aac and libfdk_aac) and one HE-AAC (v1/2) encoder (libfdk_aac). The license of libfdk_aac is not compatible with GPL, so the GPL does not permit distribution of binaries containing incompatible code when GPL-licensed code is also included. Therefore this encoder have been designated as "non-free", and you cannot download a pre-built ffmpeg that supports it. This can be resolved by compiling ffmpeg yourself. " In others words, we are talking about having a nonfree software (fdk-aac) to compete with a GPL compatible AAC-LC implementation provided by a FLOSS project (ffmpeg) ? If gst (which is LGPL) wants to (<<<legally can) have this plugin because of some weird analysis, that's the gst issue. But I would prevent any GPL compatible code (even within fedora) to link to such fdk-acc because, so far, it is illegal. As a consequence, I don't see a need to have your (forked) fdk-aac as a separate package at all in fedora, but I wouldn't care to have it buried into the gst plugin package (built statically or with a custom SONAME). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are on the CC list for the bug.
