Mapnik can be used either as a Python or a C++ library. Apart from the demo code included you need to write either a python or C++ program to do something useful. Mapnik is mainly used in the OpenStreetMap project, http://www.openstreetmap.org/. The ultimate plan is to submit all of the components of the OSM toolchain to Fedora. The goals of OSM fit neatly with Fedora - free map data to allow the development of novel GIS applications.
